Retail and E-Commerce Leadership
Rodney’s career began at Sainsbury’s, one of the UK’s largest supermarket chains, where he worked under the mentorship of then-Chairman John Sainsbury (later Lord Sainsbury of Preston Candover). It was there he developed a lifelong commitment to operational excellence, customer service, and strategic execution.
- After moving to Hong Kong, Rodney led the transformation of ParknShop, growing it from a niche expat-focused brand to a mass-market chain, expanding its footprint from 10 to over 100 stores.
- At Watsons, he identified a global retail gap in upmarket drugstore cosmetics, and led the expansion from just 8 stores to more than 15,000 stores globally.
- He was responsible for opening Watsons in Taiwan in 1987 and Beijing in 1989, making it the first retail chain present in both markets — later expanding into other countries throughout Asia.
Founder of Strawberrynet
- In 1997, Rodney founded Strawberrynet, a global beauty e-commerce pioneer.
- As CEO, he grew it to serve millions of customers across 220 countries and 38 languages, making it one of the earliest (and largest) global beauty e-commerce platforms.
Board and Business Community Leadership
- Served as Chair of the Hong Kong Retail Management Association for three consecutive years (1993–1995) — a first in the association’s history.
- Since 1995, he has been a Director of the Hong Kong Retail Management Association.
- Former Board Member of Li & Fung Retail, overseeing brands including: a. Toys“R”Us, Fotomax, Bakehouse, Fun Fun World
Sport and Community Involvement
- Served as President and Chair of the Hong Kong Cricket Club (1995–2005)

Since 2022, Samuel serves as Co-Chairman and CEO of TutorABC, leading the company’s mission to deliver “a first-class education, in a first-class way, with first-class people.”
He has over 25 years of experience across the education and investment banking sectors.
He began his career as a senior banker at Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch, where he covered the Asia-Pacific region and managed over USD 3 billion. He specialized in venture capital, pre-IPO and IPO investments, and cross-border M&A transactions
Additionally, for more than two decades, Samuel has served as Chief Representative in Taiwan for Kaplan, one of the world’s largest NYSE-listed education companies.
He is also the Co-Founder of The Yang Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports education, sport, and international exchange across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Eastern Europe.
