TOCFL Level Description

Novice

Level P-2

  • Focus on: Ability to recognize basic units of the Chinese language

  • Can recognize everyday, high-frequency words which are immediately relevant to oneself, with backtracking allowed, and meaning supported by context.

  • Can understand high-frequency words and phrases related to daily life with backtracking allowed, and meaning supported by context.

Band A

Level 3-4

  • Focus on: Basic communication ability in daily life

  • Can get an idea of the content of simple informational material and short simple descriptions, especially if there is visual support.

  • Can understand short, simple texts on familiar matters of a concrete type which consist of high frequency everyday or job-related language.

Band B

Level 5-6

  • Focus on: the comprehension and analytical ability for a context

  • Can read straightforward factual texts on subjects related to one’s field and interests with a satisfactory level of comprehension.

  • Can read with a significant degree of independence, adapting style and reading speed to different texts and purposes. Has a broad active reading vocabulary, but may experience some difficulty with low-frequency idioms.

Band C

Level 7

  • Focus on: Vocabulary extent and language proficiency

  • Can understand details in complex texts, even if they are not related to one's specific field of expertise, as long as challenging sections can be re-read.

  • Able to comprehend all written forms of language, including abstract, structurally complex, or colloquial literary and non-literary works.
