An adverse variance is where actual income is less than budget, or actual expenditure is more than budget. A favourable variance is where actual income is more than budget, or actual expenditure is less than budget.
|---|---|---|
| 營收(income) | Unfavorable | Favorable |
| 成本(expenditure) | Favorable | Unfavorable |
縮寫也有地區差異:美式寫 (F) 與 (U),英式寫 (F) 與 (A),A 是 adverse。
Revenue came in 3% below budget, which is an unfavorable variance of NT$2.1 million. / Operating expenses were favorable by NT$800,000, mainly due to lower headcount than planned.
英國特許公認會計師公會有一句話講得很直白:despite the attention it gets, the budget is rarely an accurate forecast.
We’re tracking 5% behind budget, but our latest forecast suggests we’ll close the gap by Q4.
Revenue was up 12% year on year, and 3% quarter on quarter on a seasonally adjusted basis.
A percentage point is the difference between percentages. A value of 10% falling by 1 percentage point becomes 9%. A fall of 1% would result in a value of 9.9%.
|---|---|---|
| Gross margin rose by 2 percentage points |
| Gross margin rose by 8% | 正確 | 25% × 1.08 ≈ 27%(相對變動) |
Based on the current run rate — annualizing the last three months — we’d land at around NT$120 million.
I’d be careful annualizing this quarter — there’s a seasonal pattern we should adjust for.
