No trolls! Australia is introducing new online defamation laws

Australia is introducing new defamation laws that will force online platforms like Facebook or Twitter to disclose the identities of trolls or pay the price of defamation.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison noted that the online world should not be a wild west where trolls and others go around anonymously hurting people. Since the law is specific to Australia, online platforms would not have to identify trolls located in other countries.

However, it remains unclear which specific details the platforms will be required to collect and disclose, so there are concerns that the loose definition of defamation could pose a serious threat to privacy.
