Facebook parent company Meta is laying off 13% of its staff, or more than 11,000 employees, marking the most significant job cuts in the company’s history. The layoffs come during a tough time as Meta makes an uncertain and costly bet on the metaverse, causing a wide range of challenges to its core business.
The job cuts will impact many areas of the company, and a hiring freeze is to be extended until the first quarter next year. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, “I want to take accountability for these decisions and for how we got here. I know this is tough for everyone, and I’m especially sorry to those impacted.”
