The laugh-cry emoji was the most-used emoji in the world in 2021, according to new data from the Unicode Consortium, the organization responsible for encoding universal characters for the web, including the emoji.

The organization found that 92% of the online population worldwide use emoji, and that the laugh-cry emoji — known as “Tears of Joy” — accounts for 5% of that use.

The data also showed that emoji usage hasn’t changed much since 2019, when the laugh-cry emoji and the heart emoji were the most-used emojis in the world. In fact, the laugh-cry emoji has topped the chart since at least 2017.
