Burnsville, a city in Minnesota, USA, has asked its residents not to toss pet goldfish into lakes and ponds anymore. A recent survey shows that large groups of giant goldfish in public waters have caused damage to the ecosystem.
Surprisingly, a 5cm-long goldfish in a home aquarium can grow up to around 46cm, almost the size of an American football, when released into the wild. Goldfish love to swim along the bottom of lakes and ponds, which muck up the sediment and uproot vegetation, leading to poor water quality. Besides, they reproduce rapidly and change the local food chain, threatening native species.
Goldfish have been regulated as invasive species in Minnesota and many other places which have faced the same problem. Next time, please try to find a new home for your unwanted pet fish to protect the environment.
The COVID-19 pandemic mucked up the schedule of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
