趙婷得獎中國噤聲China Muted Chloe Zhao’s Oscar Win

Chloé Zhao won best director and best picture for the Oscars, becoming the first Chinese female director ever to win the prize. However, her win was met with a muted response in her country of birth, China.

Zhao’s win was history-making. Yet, in China, the state media kept silent. There was even censorship. Any mention was taken down from the internet. Douban, an app popular with film buffs, banned searches for “Nomadland” and “Zhao Ting,” Zhao’s full name in Chinese.

Zhao faced a nationalist backlash in March when she won a Golden Globe for best director, with some saying she had insulted China in comments on the political system.
