台東大學開設全台第一南島研究博士班Taitung university launches first doctoral program on Austronesian studies

National Taitung University has launched Taiwan’s first doctoral program on Austronesian studies, offering students the opportunity to do their research and apply it to real-world scenarios and engage in intimate observations of how indigenous groups grapple with the challenges of modern life.

The institute has offered a master’s program on Austronesian studies since 2003, and the school believes the time was ripe for a doctoral program to be launched.

For the first year, the institute has recruited four students, three Taiwanese and one international, and the classes are taught in English. The program will also place a special emphasis on recruiting students from the 18 countries targeted by the government’s New Southbound Policy in order to boost Taiwan’s influence in the international community.
