The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has announced that all the organization’s tournaments in China and Hong Kong in 2022 will be cancelled due to continued uncertainty about the handling of Chinese player Peng Shuai’s sexual assault accusation and her safety.

The WTA expressed serious doubts about Peng’s whereabouts and safety, while many remain skeptical that she actually can act or speak freely. The association also stressed that the way China treated Peng’s sexual assault allegation harms women’s equality, the basis on which the WTA was founded.
