New Zealand plans to ban young people from ever buying cigarettes in their lifetime in a bid to eventually phase out smoking.
New legislation means the legal smoking age will increase every year. People aged 14 and under in 2027 will never legally be able to purchase cigarettes in New Zealand. It will also curb the number of retailers authorized to sell tobacco and cut nicotine levels in all products.
Doctors and other health experts in the country have welcomed the “world-leading” reforms, while retailers expressed concern about the impact on their businesses and warned that the move may create a black market for tobacco.
