A new movement has emerged over the last few months in China as young Chinese are rebelling against society through “lying flat,” or tangping. Observers said the movement is a reflection of China’s disillusioned middle class, faced with stagnant wages in expensive and competitive cities. The idea that there is no upward mobility give rise to this negative acceptance.  

But as tangping gained popularity, it also drew criticism from state media. Some called the philosophy “shameful” and “not a serious philosophy.” Even censors sprang into action. Internet posts and discussion threads on this topic were deleted. Experts say tangping is also a rejection of working hard and consuming —attitudes promoted by the government to keep the Chinese economy running.
