Even though Taiwan enjoys a worldwide reputation for medical services, the working environment for nursing staff does not seem to live up to that. A new survey conducted by the National Health Research Institute (NHRI) pointed out the reasons for Taiwan’s nursing shortage include lack of appreciation, overloaded work schedules, and inadequate pay.
A survey showed that only 20 percent of nurses enjoy respect in the workplace, and about the same percentage are satisfied with their wages.
Therefore, nurses are calling for better working conditions to tackle the shortage of nursing staff. The NHRI has proposed strategies to better develop careers for nurses in the hope of optimizing the workforce.
