Using a cellphone while waiting at red lights? Illegal in Taiwan

Do you use your cellphone to check messages or maps while waiting at red lights? Actually, it is not only dangerous but also illegal in Taiwan and can incur fines.

Recently, a car driver was caught by the police for using his cellphone while waiting at a red light. He argued that the car was not moving and he was not on the phone. Instead, he was just using the cellphone to check messages.

However, stopping for a red light is only temporary and does not mean that the process of driving has ended. In the first eight months this year, there have been nearly 6,000 such violations in New Taipei City.

be on the phone 指「正在打電話、正在電話中」,意思相近的是 over the phone,指「透過電話和某人講事情、交流」

例句:
Please be quiet. I am on the phone.
He told me the good news over the phone.
