The 408 Taroko Express, carrying 498 passengers including drivers and TRA staff, crashed inside a tunnel near Hualien city at 9:28 am on April 2. The derailment led to 50 people killed and more than 200 injured in the accident.
According to early indications, a maintenance vehicle unexpectedly slipped down onto the railway track. There was not enough time and distance for the Express to respond and stop but to hit on the truck and then crushed against the wall of the tunnel. The construction site manager, meanwhile the driver of the truck, has been detained for questioning. The crash was the worst train disaster in decades in Taiwan.
rail (n.)
A small rock might lead to a train derailment.
