Shilin Night Market is trying to find a new way out

The Shilin Night Market was once a bustling tourist attraction of Taipei. Now, it is struggling to keep business alive.

The number of tourists has decreased by about 60% during the pandemic, which is the primary reason for the night market’s dismal business. In addition, reports of fruit stalls ripping off customers have tarnished the night market’s reputation.

However, the government is trying to find a new way out. They have come up with a new business strategy targeting young students rather than international tourists, and have launched a “micro-tourism” program that includes cultural guides.
