Excessive smartphone use may lead to impulsive decision-making

We already know that a preference for smaller immediate rewards instead of larger delayed rewards is a sign of negative behaviors such as alcohol abuse or drug addiction. Impulsive choices are related to a person’s self-control and the ability to imagine possible future outcomes of their actions.

A recent study finds that people with lower self-control tend to use smartphones more. There is a link between high smartphone use and a craving for instant rewards. “Our findings provide further evidence that smartphone use and impulsive decision-making go hand in hand,” said the researcher. In addition, it was also noted in the research that individuals opting for instant gratification will spend more time on two types of apps: social media and gaming.
