What Is the TOCFL?

The Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) is Taiwan’s official Chinese proficiency exam. It follows CEFR standards (A1 to C1) and is divided into three broad bands:

• Band A: Levels 1 & 2 (Beginner)
• Band B: Levels 3 & 4 (Intermediate)
• Band C: Levels 5 & 6 (Advanced)

You can also take TOCFL Listening & Reading, and optionally, TOCFL Speaking or Writing.

Step 1: Know Your Level

Start by taking a mock test or placement test online to see which band you’re ready for. Don’t underestimate the vocabulary size required:

• Band A: ~1,000 words
• Band B: ~2,500 words
• Band C: ~5,000+ words

Step 2: Create a TOCFL Study Plan (6 Weeks Sample)

Week 1–2:

• Focus on high-frequency vocabulary
• Practice basic sentence structures

• Do timed reading passages
• Take mock quizzes
• Start reviewing TOCFL grammar points

Week 5–6:

• Take full practice exams under timed conditions
