Yoon Suk-yeol, a conservative former prosecutor, has been elected South Korea’s new president, defeating his liberal rival by a close margin in one of the country’s most bitter presidential elections.

Yoon edged out the ruling Democratic Party’s Lee Jae-myung by less than 1%, with more than 98 percent of the ballots counted.

Yoon said during his campaign that he would honor the constitution and the parliament and work with opposition parties when he takes office as the country’s next leader. However, as an avowed “anti-feminist” he has pledged to abolish the Ministry for Gender Equality, claiming South Korean women do not suffer systemic discrimination.
