It is very important to read English books or articles as often as you can. These readings could be short stories or novels, texts from textbooks, newspapers etc. Choose an interesting article that is not too difficult for you, there are many easy to read adult books available. Don’t only focus on study materials, try to read everyday language, novels are a great resource for this.
Try not to look up every word. It doesn’t matter if you understand all of the words. You will be surprised to see how many words you do know and how easy it is to understand a sentence when you read it in context. So, try to concentrate on what you do understand and guess the rest. If you read something that you are interested in you won’t have a problem understanding it.
Do you want to increase your speaking speed? Well, read aloud everyday, take about 10 minutes and read aloud to yourself. This will also help with your pronunciation.
Be focused try not to translate from Chinese into English
Train yourself to think in English when you are conversing in English. Once you hit Level 6 and 7 you should focus more and more on this. Try to think and speak in English, it doesn’t matter if your sentences sound wrong. Your teacher will help you and correct you.
When you walk in the street, name items that you observe in English, speak to yourself in English when you are alone and sing English songs. Within no time you will be thinking in English without translating from Chinese to English!
Improve your English get a Pen Friend.
Try to find a pen friend, if you search the internet you will find several good chat lines where you could discuss different topics with foreigners. This is an excellent way to communicate and converse on a regular basis with English speaking people. Ask them to correct your sentences if they aren’t grammatically correct.
Improve your English by watching movies
Thanks to DVD, watching films in English has become an easy thing to do.
Choose your favorite film – you’ve watched that film a dozen times and probably know all the dialogues off by heart in your native language. So to follow the story will be easy for you.
Have paper and pen ready as you may want to write down useful words or phrases that you wish to learn. English subtitles might be useful for that (although they might differ from what is actually being said). |
